How to Wash Silk and Lace So They Last for Years?

The fastest way to ruin a beautiful piece is to treat it like a T-shirt. Silk loses its sheen in hot water. Lace snags on a zipper in the same load. Elastic gives up after a few rounds in the dryer. None of it is dramatic. It happens a little at a time, until the piece you loved looks tired.

Good care takes about ten minutes. Here is the routine worth keeping.

Start with the label, then the sink

Check the care tag first, because fabrics blend in ways you can't always see. If it says hand wash, believe it. Fill a clean basin with cool water and add a small amount of detergent made for delicates. Regular detergent is built to break down protein stains, and silk is a protein fiber.

Let the piece soak for five minutes. Move it gently through the water. Don't scrub, twist or wring. Rinse in cool water until it runs clear.

Dry flat, away from heat

Lay the piece on a clean towel, roll the towel to press the water out, then unroll and reshape. Dry it flat. Hang bras by the center gore, never by the straps, which stretch under wet weight. Keep everything out of direct sun and away from radiators. Heat breaks down elastane, and elastane is what keeps a band snug.

If you must use a machine

Some days the sink isn't happening. Fasten every hook, give each piece its own mesh bag, choose the delicate cycle with cold water, and use the lowest spin. Never the dryer.

Store it like you mean it

Fold silk loosely so creases don't set. Nest molded cups inside one another instead of folding one into the other. Keep lace away from hooks and hardware. A drawer divider does more for the life of your lingerie than any product you can buy.

Rotate

Elastic needs a day to recover. Wearing the same bra two days running stretches it faster than washing does. Three or four pieces in rotation will each outlast one worn daily.

Why this matters more as quality goes up

Inexpensive pieces are made to be replaced. Luxury underwear for women is cut from silk, fine lace and mesh that reward attention, and that soften and settle with wear when they're looked after. The care is part of the pleasure. A few quiet minutes at the sink, and the piece is ready for the next time you want to feel exactly like yourself.
